Service & Leadership

Jill lives in the city of Flint. Years ago, her husband, a school teacher, wanted to move to Flint and though Jill grew up in the small town of Frankenmuth where they “never had anything to do” as a kid, she liked the idea of Flint because it was a city. Little did she and her husband know that they would encounter two hugely significant events shortly after moving there: 1) The financial crisis of 2008-09 that led to a major drop in real estate values and 2) the Flint Water Crisis. While most people would have perhaps fled the city while they had the chance, Jill and her husband chose to stay because they wanted to be a part of the solution. Flint has become their cherished home and they continue to take part in its revitalization and renaissance.

Jill is always looking for ways to give back to the Flint community. Currently, she serves as chair of the investment committee, a finance committee member and as Vice President on the board of directors for the YWCA of Flint.  She is also the board President of the Flint Women’s Forum. She serves on the board of trustees for the Flint Institute of Music (FIM) and is a trustee for the Flint Community Players.

Jill's Money Story

“On a personal level, as a little girl, I often read novels where the heroine had to marry for money, not love. I wanted a choice, so I vowed to earn my own income. Later, when my parents retired early, I saw them struggle to find a trustworthy financial advisor to help manage their money. It made me think that there should be more people out there willing to work with clients to help them better understand their finances. All that said, I did not set out to become a financial advisor. In fact, due to my many interests, I had a rather roundabout path that includes changing my college major, attending college two different times, and switching careers. I just did not know what I wanted to be when I grew up because there were so many good things to be.

I started working for Sherri Stephens as a Client Service Associate in the early 2000s while I was going to school for accounting. I learned a lot and loved it, but at the time I thought I wanted to be an accountant, so I left Stephens Wealth Management to work for a public accounting firm and later, the IRS. I have some fun stories to share from the IRS years. Let me say, it is so much easier to tell people where I work now. When I was at the public accounting firm, I worked on taxes for high-net-worth individuals and estates and trusts.

With this new knowledge in hand and knowing that I always enjoyed working with clients, I left the IRS to come work for Sherri again. I missed interacting with people, sharing knowledge, and the opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life. Client meetings bring me energy and fill me up with good feelings. I’m especially interested in helping younger clients build a solid financial future and working with older single women who may need a lot of help with their finances."
