Staff Spotlight – Jill Carr

Staff Spotlight – Jill Carr

This month’s spotlight is on our Director of Financial Planning, Senior Wealth Advisor, Jill Carr CFP®, CPA®, CEPA®, CPFA®

Explain your roles at the firm. What do you do with each key role and what about it do you enjoy most?

  • I am a senior wealth advisor and what I enjoy most is meeting with clients and helping to solve their financial problems. I like giving advice to people and then seeing that it helps a client when put into practice. I am the director of financial planning – which means I am really good at creating financial plans using a cadre of planning tools. If your advisor has gone over a plan with you this year, I would likely have created it or helped them out.

What community organizations/ volunteer opportunities are you currently involved in?  What do these organizations do and what is your role?

  • I am on several local boards, largely in a capacity where I help to monitor the financial aspects of those boards for oversight. What I have found is that if you do a good job at one role, chances are you will be asked to do another one as well. I really enjoy helping others, so this has been an important aspect of my life. I’ve met a lot of people in the community who enjoy doing similar work – so my friendship and professional circles have grown a lot.
    • Board of Directors for the YWCA of Greater Flint. The YWCA’s mission is to eliminate racism and empower women.
    • Board of Directors for the Junior League of Flint (JLF). The JLF’s mission is to promote volunteerism, develop the potential of women and improve their community.
    • Board of Directors for the Flint Women’s Forum.   The Flint Women’s Forum strives to increase the visibility of women leaders and facilitate the effectiveness of women in the community.
    • Board of Trustees for the Flint Institute of Music (FIM).  The FIM’s mission is to awaken and nurture the creative lives of children, youth, and adults.
    • Board of Trustees for the Flint Community Players (FCP). The FCP has provided community theatre to the Greater Flint area since 1928.

What are a couple of important lessons you have learned while working at SWMG?

  • Things are usually fixable if you are willing to be flexible.
  • Many people may not know that I worked at SWMG in the early 2000s. I left to pursue other things, including obtaining my CPA®. Since I’ve been back, I’ve added many new skills and certifications, but my CPA® background and knowledge truly provides the most value to our team and clients.

If you weren’t working in the wealth management field, what do you think you would have done instead?

  • I probably would have tried to do something with professional organizing. I love mess, as Marie Kondo says.

What is something that clients might be surprised to learn about you?

  • In 2002, I was an audience member of the Jerry Springer show, and I got on camera by asking a question. They even started an audience chant based on my question.
